European Patent Office and Russian Patent Office agreed to launch Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) pilot program

During the annual Assemblies of the member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization which was held in Geneva from October 3 to October 11, 2016, the President of the European Patent Office (EPO), Benoit Battistelli held a meeting with the Director General of the Russian Patent Office (Rospatent), Grigory Ivliev. The meeting resulted in extension of the agreement concerning the Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) as well as signing the Memorandum about the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) pilot program.

It is expected that through the PPH program the proceedings on patent applications will be conducted faster with higher quality standards. This program will run for three years starting in 2017 and will allow applicants having at least one claim determined to be patentable/allowable in either EPO or Rospatent to have a corresponding application filed with another office processed in an accelerated manner.

The PPH program aims to promote joint efforts of the parties to expand the usage of patents, to develop innovations and trade as well as enable the European companies to benefit from simplified access to patent protection in Russia. The fast-track approach also opens up an efficient route to high-quality patent protection in Europe for innovators from Russia.
