As from July 1, 2009 obligatory GMO marking will appear on food products in Ukraine
Since July 1, 2009 Ukrainians will be able to realize their constitutional right to information on GMO-containing products. This is a big achievement for the country.
The Cabinet of Ministers has introduced obligatory marking of products containing genetically modified organisms from July 1, 2009. This is stated in the Cabinet of Ministers' resolution No. 468 dated May 13, 2009.
In particular, this resolution approves the procedures for labeling food products containing genetically modified organisms and food products that are manufactured with the use of genetically modified organisms.
Food products, which contain genetically modified organisms or made using GMOs are to be labeled if GMO content in products or materials used for production exceeds 0.1%. Food products, which do not contain genetically modified organisms or those containing less than 0.1% thereof may be marked "without genetically modified organisms."
On the list of the contents of food products the words "genetically modified" or "contains genetically modified organisms or manufactured with its use" are to be written in brackets after every product containing such organisms and the names of the organisms are to be stated.
If the products containing genetically modified organisms are not sold in packages, the marking is to be placed on the corresponding tags with the names of the products.
The information on the labels of food products is to be verified in accordance with procedures established by the State Committee for Technical Regulation and Consumer Policy.
Food products containing genetically modified organisms are to be labeled by their producers or suppliers.
Those food products, which contain genetically modified organisms and are not marked, are subject to be removed from sale.
